Downtown Nashville Condos, Lofts, and Historic Homes
People from all walks of life are migrating to the urban lofts, condos, and historic homes in Downtown Nashville.
In a survey conducted by The Downtown Nashville Partnership, 60 percent of respondents listed the “urban experience” of living near restaurants, entertainment venues and sports events as their No. 1 influence for living downtown. Fifty-one percent picked living close to work, making it the second-most popular choice of the respondents.
Take the Newmans. “I moved downtown primarily so I could walk to work,” says Margie Newman.
On a “tough” day, she says it takes her about one minute to walk to work. David Newman, Margie’s husband, walks four blocks to his work. In addition, the Newmans are fanatical fans of the Nashville Predators, a factor that influenced their decision to buy a condo at Encore. “We are 100 feet from hockey and 20 feet from the symphony,” Newman says. “We’re committed. We fully intend to raise our children here. I just don’t see a reason you can’t.”
Or take the Koeper family. Shari and Kevin Koeper moved downtown from the suburbs because of proximity to work and walkability. “We can walk to almost any event, parade or festival without having to pay for parking,” Shari Koeper says. “We have found we are a lot busier than we were before we lived downtown because there is so much going on.”
Or ask Sam Champion. He treks from his condo at the Watauga House on Second Avenue South to his work on Broadway. “I would prefer not to have to get in the car to do anything,” Champion says. “I really don’t drive. There’s no reason to do it.”
These Downtown Nashville urbanites do more than trudge to work. They walk to restaurants, art galleries, bars, parks, the downtown grocery store, friends’ places, the library, Walgreens and the dry cleaners.
Then there are the dogs. Champion walks Stab, his 9-year-old pooch, three times a day at Riverfront Park. And Newman adds, “You are hard-pressed to find a downtown resident without a dog.” The Newmans, have a teacup poodle, Georgia Lee.
